How to Annotate a PDF Online

Creatorr's PDF annotator lets you mark up any PDF with drawings, highlights, text boxes, arrows, and rectangles — all from your browser with no software to install.

Available Annotation Tools

  • Pen — Freehand drawing. Adjustable color and line width.
  • Highlight — Semi-transparent highlight marker for emphasizing text.
  • Rectangle — Draw attention boxes around important areas.
  • Arrow — Point to specific elements on the page.
  • Text — Click on the page to add typed annotations.
  • Undo / Redo — Step back and forth through annotation history.

Steps

  1. Upload your PDF file.
  2. Select an annotation tool from the toolbar.
  3. Draw or click on the PDF page to annotate.
  4. Navigate pages with Prev/Next buttons.
  5. Click "Download PDF" to save with annotations embedded.

Common Use Cases

  • Document review — Highlight key clauses in contracts, circle items that need revision, and add inline comments.
  • Grading and feedback — Teachers can mark student papers with corrections, checkmarks, and notes without printing.
  • Design reviews — Draw arrows pointing to layout issues, circle misaligned elements, and add change-request notes on mockup PDFs.
  • Research and study — Highlight important passages, draw connection lines between concepts, and add margin notes.
  • Team collaboration — Annotate a shared PDF, download it, and send the marked-up version to colleagues for discussion.

Annotator vs. Edit PDF

The PDF Annotator is designed for review-style markup: highlights, freehand drawings, arrows, and callout boxes that visually annotate the document. Edit PDF, on the other hand, adds permanent text and images directly into the page content. Use the Annotator when you want to comment on or review a document; use Edit PDF when you need to permanently modify it.

Tips for Better Annotations

  • Use the Highlight tool for text passages and the Rectangle tool for images or tables.
  • Choose distinct colors for different reviewers or topic areas so feedback is easy to scan.
  • Add a Text annotation next to each highlight explaining what needs to change.
  • After annotating, flatten the PDF if you want annotations to become permanent and non-removable.

Privacy

All processing is client-side. pdf.js renders pages, Fabric.js handles annotations, and pdf-lib embeds them into the saved PDF. Nothing is uploaded, no account is needed, and your file never leaves your device.
