How OCR Works
If a page has no embedded text (scanned/image PDF), the tool renders it as an image and runs browser-based OCR using Tesseract.js. The OCR engine (~15 MB) loads only when needed and is cached for future use. OCR pages are labelled [OCR] in the output. Accuracy depends on scan quality — clean, high-resolution scans work best.
Common Use Cases
- Research and academics — Copy quotes, citations, and data from journal articles and textbooks without retyping.
- Data entry — Pull structured text from invoices, receipts, and forms into spreadsheets or databases.
- Content repurposing — Extract blog drafts, eBook chapters, or newsletter copy from published PDFs for editing.
- Legal discovery — Search and extract key phrases from scanned legal filings using built-in OCR.
- Accessibility — Convert image-only PDFs to selectable text so screen readers can process them.
Tips for Best Results
- For scanned PDFs, use high-resolution scans (300 DPI or above) for the best OCR accuracy.
- Select the correct OCR language before extraction — mismatched languages reduce accuracy.
- Use the search bar to jump to specific terms in long documents.
- After extracting, use TXT to PDF to convert the cleaned text back into a new PDF.
Privacy
All processing happens locally in your browser. Your PDF is never uploaded to any server. The tool uses pdf.js, the same engine that powers Firefox's built-in PDF viewer. OCR models are downloaded once and cached — no data leaves your device.
